Jones Luck: A Family Phenomenon
Luck is a funny thing. Some people believe in jinxes, hexes, or simple coincidence. But in my family, we have a term all our own: Jones Luck. You see, my last name is Jones, and over the years, we’ve come to recognize a peculiar pattern when it comes to our luck. It’s not just any kind of luck—it’s extreme luck. There is no middle ground. When it’s good, it’s miraculous. When it’s bad, it’s catastrophic.
Jones Luck has been a running joke among family and close friends for as long as I can remember. But behind the humor lies a very real, almost eerie pattern. Our lives seem to swing like a pendulum between two extremes. We don’t get the everyday, run-of-the-mill kind of luck that most people experience. There are no mild inconveniences or small victories. With Jones Luck, it’s all or nothing.
When it’s bad, it feels like the universe is conspiring against us. Car accidents, devastating illnesses, freak injuries, house fires—you name it, we’ve probably experienced it. And when things go wrong, they don’t just go wrong; they unravel in such a spectacularly terrible fashion that people outside the family often find it hard to believe. It’s the kind of bad luck that can change the course of your entire life.
But the other side of Jones Luck is just as baffling—and far more welcome. When the good luck strikes, it feels like the stars have aligned just for us. Job offers out of nowhere, finding true love in the most unexpected circumstances, miraculous recoveries, or financial windfalls that appear when we need them most. These moments are so dazzlingly good that they feel like something out of a movie.

The unpredictability is what makes Jones Luck so unique. We never know when the pendulum is going to swing, or which direction it will go. It’s both thrilling and terrifying. Sometimes, it feels like we’re living on the edge of a cliff, waiting to see if the next gust of wind will knock us over or lift us to the clouds.
Over time, we’ve learned to embrace it—or at least, accept it. Jones Luck is part of who we are. It binds us together as a family and gives us a shared understanding of the wild, unpredictable journey we’re on. We laugh about it, because what else can you do? We brace ourselves when things seem too calm, knowing that the next wave could be just around the corner. And we hold onto hope because when the good luck comes, it makes every hardship worthwhile.
So, if you ever hear one of us say, “That’s Jones Luck for you,” just know—it’s not just a phrase. It’s a way of life. And for better or worse, it’s ours.
